What is a Doula?

A doula provides emotional, physical, and informational support to pregnant people and their family before, during, and after childbirth.

As a doula, my goal is to help you achieve the most positive birth experience you can. No two births are the same and there is little predictability involved. I will help you navigate this amazing journey with confidence and unwavering support.

 What is emotional support?

  • Provide encouragement and affirmation

  • Listen to and validate your feelings

  • Create a non-judgmental trusting relationship

  • Empower and increase confidence

  • Lower anxiety and fears

What is physical support?

Physical support refers to helping alleviate the pain associated with childbirth. Things such as:

  • Pain management techniques – changing positions, use of props, etc.

  • Breathing and relaxation exercises

  • Massage

What is information support?

I am equipped to provide you with fact based information you need to make the best decisions for yourself and your family. From birthing options to feeding and infant care, I can supply the resources you need.

Benefits of a Doula:

  • More positive birth experiences

  • Reduced use of pain medications

  • Reduced use of Pitocin

  • Shorter labours

  • Less cesareans

  • Higher Apgar scores

  • Increased breastfeeding success

I have a partner, why would I need a doula?

A doula does not replace a support partner, but compliments them. Your partner is likely experiencing all the same feelings you are. I am here to guide and support both of you into parenthood.

Doulas do not:

  • Perform medical task such as checking fetal heart rate or vaginal exams

  • Decide your birth plan or make medical decisions for you

  • Speak on your behalf to medical staff, although I do help facilitate these discussions
